Five days with Katri and Matti

Pauli's parents visited us last week for five days. They rented a car which gave us the opportunity to see more than just Oldenburg. On Saturday we went to Groningen which is a city in the Netherlands. First we took a look at the market where cheese, fruits, vegetables, fish, candy and flowers are sold. Afterwards we had coffee and vlaai, a typical Dutch pie. On our way back to Oldenburg we visited Ditzum, which is a small fishing village in East Frisia. There we had fresh fish from the Northern Sea in a restaurant that was located directly at the harbor. Afterwards we went to the so called Bohrinsel which is an old oil drilling platform in an inlet of the Northern Sea. Then we went to my parents to have coffee and cake. It was the first time that Pauli's and my parents met each other. I was a bit afraid that they would have problems communicating with each other but that wasn't a problem at all because Pauli and his parents were able to understand and speak German better than I thought.

On Sunday we went out for breakfast and visited a museum showing an exhibition about Emperor Frederick II. The next museum we visited that day was in Emden. It had an armory full of armors and weapons from the Middle Ages and information about the history of Emden. We went to Aurich, another city in East Frisia, for ice cream and coffee. On our way back to Oldenburg we drove through Wilhelmshaven where Pauli expected to see war ships but unfortunately we could see them only from far away. Later on we found out that there is a war ship museum in Wilhelmshaven but three museums in one day might have been too much.

On Monday we all met in the evening to buy a TV for Pauli but without success. So Pauli has to continue learning German without a TV. Tuesday afternoon Katri, Pauli and I baked lots of pulla for Pauli's birthday. Pauli took most of them to his work but some were reserved for us and Pauli's flat mates. They turned out so good that they were gone in less than an hour.

Tuesday evening we drove around in the area south of Oldenburg where I hadn't been before. I was surprised to see so many trees (for those of you who haven't been here: Oldenburg and the area north from Oldenburg doesn't have many trees). It actually looked like a real forest. It was really nice to see it.

To sum up: we had a really nice time with lots of sightseeing and with lots of good food.
